May 1st, Spring Tree Pickup and Planting Event

Date: Saturday May 1st, 2021 (rain date Saturday May 8th)

Time: 8am -10am

Location: Ahrens Park

Time to pick up those trees you ordered through the 1000+ Trees initiative for right of way street planting! The period for ordering spring planted trees through 1000+ Trees is over, and thanks to generous donations, grant assistance and bulk pricing discounts, we were able to provide almost 40 trees at reduced price trees to homeowners for this spring planting event. To sign up for a pickup time, please fill out —> this short form.

Before you can pick up your tree, you will need to provide documentation of your official city tree planting permit and the Iowa “One Call” diggers hotline (call 811) assessment. Both of these steps should be done ahead of time. You will not be able to pick up or legally plant your tree without having completed them. There will be volunteers at the event who will record your information and then help you locate your tree.

Trees come in a large container and will require two people to lift and maneuver the tree. If you are picking up your tree, you will need a truck, vehicle trailer or other hauling capacity. The tree will be about 8-10 feet tall, weigh around 60 lbs, and have a trunk diameter of 1.5 inches. Tree delivery is also available, and can be requested on the above form.

If you require assistance in planting your tree, transportation/lifting, or with weekly watering and care, the TreeCorps volunteers are there to help! They will work with you in preparing the root ball, digging, planting, staking, mulching and watering your new tree, all you have to do is ask! If you know you will require planting/care assistance, please indicate on your sign-up form (also linked above) or email the TreeCorps volunteer coordinator ahead of time with the location of your tree and identify what help you will need.

However, if you would like to plant your own tree, we recommend you watch a short instructional video, or read through this pamphlet first, to ensure the proper planting, care, and long term health of that tree.

All trees planted in the right of way through 1000+ Trees will be logged into a tree registry and come with a unique ID tag with the species, location and a QR code. The Tree registry will work to keep track of the trees planted, their health and help in developing a city-wide urban forestry plan.

Remember, please wear a face mask when picking up your tree and stay socially distanced, mask up Grinnell!

Look forward to our next round of tree orders for fall planting as well as a summertime seedling give-a-way. Also stay tuned for future backyard fruit and nut tree planting initiatives!
