On Saturday, July 7, Imagine Grinnell (IG) will combine its third annual Giving Gardens bike tour with a new offering—the first annual Grinnell Gravel Tour, a cycling option that is growing in popularity nationwide and within the community.

The bike tour is being coordinated this year by IG intern Kate Wiley, a 2016 Grinnell High School graduate. The bike tours are part of Imagine Grinnell’s mission to improve quality of life and promote a healthy environment for the Grinnell area with support from individuals, families, and businesses. Fundraising Is Underway to Revamp/Re-ramp Bailey Park Skatepark!!!
Imagine Grinnell will lead fundraising efforts to revamp and re-ramp the skatepark located in Bailey Park at 8th Ave. and Prince St.
Grinnell Parks and Recreation board member Shawn Walters explains the importance of continuing to offer a skatepark venue for area youth. “Many of the kids who participate in skateboarding or BMX biking aren’t involved in organized, team sports, so they need a central, safe area to focus on their sport,” Walters said. “Right now these kids have to travel to other towns if they want to compete. The new skatepark could be a good draw for Grinnell to hold competitions here.”

Registration begins at 8:15 am and the event begins at 9 am.

The starting location is in front of the Grinnell High School at Sunset Street and 8th Avenue.

$5 for adults age 19 and up, free for youth under 18. Registration for the season is included with Imagine Grinnell membership.

2nd Saturdays is a monthly series of events on the Grinnell Area Recreational Trail that runs May through September. Each event includes a 5K run/walk, a 1K Kids Fun Run, and a 5K, 10K, or 20K bike ride. There are prizes for registered participants, plus a Grand Prize drawing from all participants at the final event each year. It’s great fun for all ages and a wonderful way to get out and enjoy the trail! With over 120 participants in the past three years, 2nd Saturdays is a popular weekend activity.

 

 

Summer 2013 Youth Bike Camp

What? A fun and safe opportunity for youth to learn about road safety and bike mechanics!

Lesson topics:

Learning bike parts and basic mechanics, changing a flat tire, using brakes and gears efficiently, adjusting the fit of a helmet and seat, recognizing traffic signs, and discussing right of way, intersections, crashes, and road conditions

There will be themed rides to attractions around the town of Grinnell that are accessible via the Grinnell Area Recreational Trail.

Who? Youth entering into 4th grade to 7th grade

When? July 8-12 & 15-17; from 9am-11am

Where? The Foundation Offices at Ahrens Park, 1510 Penrose Street

Led by Executive Director Sarah Smith & Grinnell College Apprentice in Nonprofit Management Ellyn Ochs ’13 and in collaboration with Bikes To You
