Arbor Lake Park is a recreational area on the southwest side of Grinnell. The 81 acre park includes a small lake, a restored prairie area, and many acres of woodland. (See aerial photo of the entire area at bottom of this page).
A natural surface trail around the lake provides a scenic option for those looking to walk, run or ride in a natural setting. In 2011 Imagine Grinnell helped secure grant funds that allowed the city to pave a section along the eastern edge of the lake. This trail connects to the larger Grinnell Area Recreation Trail (GART).
Cross country running/biking trails development
In addition to the lake trail, the acres of woodland east of the lake include many rustic trails. Imagine Grinnell is working with the City to further develop these trails for cross country running and mountain biking. (See proposed trail expansion at bottom of this page.)
Hudson Memorial Prairie
The Hudson Memorial Prairie is located on the southern end of the lake. The area is named after former Executive Director Mark Hudson who died after a sudden illness in 2003. Memorial funds were used to plant an area of prairie.
Work to improve the water quality and decrease the algae growth in the lake is an ongoing project for the City of Grinnell and one that Imagine Grinnell has supported in many ways. Development of a rain garden along the eastern edge of the lake was designed to help capture runoff from the park area. Educational signage has been placed at the park and throughout the watershed area to raise awareness of problems related to runoff entering the lake.
Arbor Lake also has a monitoring team. Check out their activities.
