The latest section of the Grinnell Area Recreation Trail will be officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony at Lions Park on Saturday, May 10th at
9:30 a.m. The ribbon cutting is to celebrate the newest extension of
the GART from Lions Park south to Highway Six at Iowa Valley
Community College. The public is invited to the celebration which will be followed by the first 2nd Saturday event of the season.
Plans are also under way to begin work on the other end of the trail which will run Arbor Lake and Industrial Avenue. Plans are to eventually join the sections of the trail so that it would be complete between Rock Creek and Industrial Avenue, possibly eventually extending south beyond I-80 to Grinnell Mutual and future development in that area.
What about Highway 6? Grant applications have been submitted under three Iowa DOT programs to secure funding for the underpass that will permit a seamless highway transit for all trail users. The school district and the Grinnell police are extremly supportive of this effort, citing important safety benefits for students and other pedestrians who regularly must cross the busy highway.
This year’s kick-off will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 10,
just following Imagine Grinnell’s ribbon-cutting ceremony (to which
you’re all invited, of course!) for the new bike trail section. The
ceremony starts at 9:30 a.m. @ Lions Park (8th & Sunset).
Register for 2nd Saturdays any time after 9 a.m. Choose from a 5k run-walk, a timed event, or a 5k, 10k or 20k recreational bike ride. Entry is $5 for adults and $3 for entrants under 18. Kids under 5 are free.
***NOTE that subsequent 2nd Saturdays start times will be 9 a.m.***
Stay tuned! More 2008 2nd Saturdays dates to come!
